I recently attended <a data-mce-href="https://www.norseforgedgathering.com/" href="https://www.norseforgedgathering.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NorseForged Gathering 6</a> in North Carolina: a three-day immersive fantasy festival built around camping, music, combat sports, craftsmanship, creators, and modern “Viking” culture. On the surface, it appears to be exactly what many people today are hungry for: tribe, belonging, firelight, community, shared aesthetics, and escape from the gray sterility of modern life.And to be fair, not all of it was bad.There were genuinely good people there. Skilled craftsmen. Talented musicians. Honest conversations around camps and fires. Moments of laughter and temporary freedom from the suffocating machinery of the modern world. I met people who clearly long for something real, something ancestral, something deeper than the empty consumer identity that modern society offers them.But despite all of that, I left the Gathering with a growing sense of spiritual exhaustion and disappointment. Not because the event failed to entertain me.But because it revealed something about modern pagan culture that many people see, yet very few are willing to say out loud.No matter how many runes, Mjölnir's, or talismans people wear around their necks… No matter how many “tribal” aesthetics are adopted… No matter how many gods are invoked, horns are raised, or fires are lit…Human beings will still bring ego, vanity, manipulation, hierarchy, performative behavior, and social corruption into any space they occupy. Even spaces that claim to stand apart from modern society.Especially those spaces.<h2>The Illusion Of Depth</h2>One of the things that struck me most at NorseForged was how easily symbolism becomes mistaken for substance.Modern Heathen and Viking-inspired spaces are often saturated with imagery:<ul><li>axes</li><li>antlers</li><li>tattoos</li><li>linen tunics</li><li>ritual language</li><li>campfire philosophy</li><li>social media aesthetics</li><li>and curated personas</li></ul>But aesthetics are not character.&nbsp; A man can speak endlessly about Odin while possessing none of the wisdom, sacrifice, restraint, or self-discipline associated with him. A person can claim to honor Thor while lacking courage, reliability, or integrity. A community can preach “tribe” while quietly tolerating arrogance, exclusion, dishonesty, and status games beneath the surface.The old Germanic worldview never judged people merely by what they claimed to believe. People were judged by conduct:<ul><li>oath-keeping</li><li>reciprocity</li><li>reliability</li><li>restraint</li><li>courage</li><li>hospitality</li><li>and how they carried themselves when no audience was watching</li></ul>Today, many modern pagan spaces have inverted this entirely. And ego is one of the most spiritually corrosive forces any tradition can face.I watched people posture as enlightened voices of wisdom while simultaneously displaying behavior that revealed insecurity, pretentiousness, vanity, or a hunger for social power. Not everyone, of course. But enough that the pattern became impossible to ignore.What disturbed me most was not that flawed people existed there. People gather because they are starving for authenticity. But once enough people gather together, performance inevitably emerges.People begin curating identities. Curating aesthetics. Curating personas. Curating “brands.”Even spirituality itself becomes something staged for visibility. The campfire becomes a backdrop. The ritual becomes content. The gathering becomes a social ladder.And eventually, something sacred begins to die beneath all the noise.I found myself repeatedly asking: "What remains when the costumes come off?"Strip away the social media pages. Strip away the handcrafted leather. Strip away the "Viking" imagery. Strip away the fantasy immersion.Who are these people really?Because in many cases, I saw individuals fleeing modern emptiness while unknowingly recreating the exact same shallow status structures they claim to reject. But there was a lingering sense of dissonance sitting in the back of my mind before events even unfolded around me. As Heathens, many of us speak often about intuition, Wyrd, omens, instinct, and pattern recognition. Historically, our ancestors understood that human beings are capable of perceiving imbalance long before it fully reveals itself outwardly.Sometimes you enter a place and immediately feel warmth, alignment, and groundedness. Other times, beneath the music and laughter, there is tension beneath the floorboards. Not visible at first, but present.And over the course of the Gathering, that feeling only intensified.What I witnessed was not some catastrophic collapse into chaos. It was something subtler and perhaps more concerning: spiritual hollowness hidden beneath theatrical intensity. People desperately wanting meaning… while participating in environments that often encourage superficiality instead of depth.<h2>The Hunger Modern People Cannot Name </h2>This is the tragedy of events like NorseForged. I do not believe most people attend because they are foolish. I think many attend because they are spiritually starving.Modern society has stripped people of:<ul><li>rootedness</li><li>initiation</li><li>shared myth</li><li>sacred community</li><li>meaningful rites</li><li>ancestral continuity</li><li>and authentic belonging.</li></ul>People are desperate to feel connected to something older and more real than the artificial existence modernity offers them. That hunger is real. I felt it there everywhere. But hunger alone does not create wisdom. A crowd of starving people can still build shallow cultures around itself if nobody is willing to pursue discipline, honesty, accountability, or self-examination.Aesthetic tribalism is not the same thing as spiritual depth, and pretending otherwise only delays the deeper work many people truly need.<h2>A Necessary Reflection </h2>This article is not an attack on NorseForged specifically. In many ways, the Gathering merely reflects broader problems that exist throughout modern paganism, online culture, influencer culture, and even human nature itself.Nor is this article written from bitterness.If anything, it is written from disappointment.Because I believe many people involved in these spaces sincerely long for truth, transformation, and community. But too often, those desires become swallowed by ego, performance, social climbing, escapism, and hollow spectacle.As a Heathen, I cannot ignore that contradiction anymore. Our ancestors were flawed human beings too. The sagas themselves are filled with jealousy, pride, betrayal, greed, arrogance, manipulation, and violence. But the old traditions did not glorify those traits. They warned about them constantly.Modern Heathen spaces would do well to remember that. No amount of ritual aesthetics can compensate for a lack of integrity. A Heathen Reflection on NorseForged Gathering: When Community Becomes Performance

Have you ever been in a situation where you either told someone "Have it your way!", or "Suit yourself!"? Has anyone ever told you something along the lines of "Don't say I didn't warn you!"?&nbsp; On the surface, these types of verbal responses may seem like an "open threat', with no real or credible consequence to follow. But in many of the Sagas, words are more than just warnings: they're sentences to carry out. One such example can be seen in the Flóamanna saga (“Saga of the Men of Flói”), also known as Þorgils saga Ørrabeinsstjúps. This is one of the Icelandic family sagas, which primarily follows Þorgils Ørrabeinsstjúpr, whose life is marked by misfortune, exile, and endurance in extreme conditions (especially the famous Greenland episodes).But early in the saga, before Þorgils’ later hardships, we are given a sharp window into honor culture and social signaling, particularly through the conflict involving a man named Kolr, his sister Guðrún, and another man called Sörli.<figure id="figure-58muhhp9zkmltqlab3"><img id="58muhhp9zkmltqlab3" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/13zFBYbz5PFZ5kMMcaJlSgJqTC4Tmf9CkssbwIwzwEHJkVDgYDBkUjHuRVzZFPak.jpeg" alt="Scottish Redhead Warrior at dawn" title="Scottish Redhead Warrior at dawn" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/13zFBYbz5PFZ5kMMcaJlSgJqTC4Tmf9CkssbwIwzwEHJkVDgYDBkUjHuRVzZFPak.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>In the early chapters of this sage, we encounter a moment that perfectly captures how serious words were in the Old Norse world.&nbsp;It comes in the tense exchange between Kolr and Sörli, when Sörli shows interest in Kolr’s sister, Guðrún.<blockquote>Sörli hét maður. Hann bjó skammt frá Kálfaholti. Hann venur komur sínar í Kálfaholt á fund Guðrúnar systur þeirra Starkaðar og Kols. Einn tíma fer Kolur á leið til Sörla og biður hann láta af komum til Guðrúnar systur þeirra. Sörli kvaðst mundu það gera eftir hugþokka sínum en hirða ekki um orð hans."Þú munt ráða," segir Kolur.</blockquote>"There was a man named Sörli. He lived not far from Kálfaholt. He used to come to Kálfaholt to see Guðrún, the sister of Starkad and Kol. One day Kolur went to Sörli and asked him to stop coming to Guðrún, their sister. Sörli said he would do as he pleased, but heeded no word from him. 'You will decide,' Kolur said."At first glance, this sounds almost permissive — even passive. But in saga culture, this phrase carries weight far beyond its literal translation.<h2>Not Permission... A Final Notice</h2>In the honor-bound society reflected in the sagas, speech is rarely casual. Kolr’s words are not giving Sörli freedom to proceed. They are doing something much colder and more deliberate:<ul><li>Kolr has issued his warning</li><li>He has fulfilled his social duty</li><li>Responsibility now shifts to Sörli</li></ul>In modern terms, it lands closer to:<ul><li>“Suit yourself.”</li><li>“Your call.”</li><li>“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” But even those soften the edge. In saga logic, this is the moment the path to violence becomes morally structured.</li></ul>What follows is grim but predictable. Sörli ignores the warning and continues pursuing Guðrún. Kolr eventually kills him. Importantly, the saga does not frame this as hot-headed rage. Instead, it reads like the natural consequence of ignored counsel. Kolr established the boundary. Sörli chose to cross it. Where a modern story might give us threats and shouting, the saga gives us something far more chilling: calm inevitability.Kolr does not bluster. He does not posture. He simply makes the responsibility clear.<blockquote>Your choice becomes your fate. That is the real power behind the phrase.</blockquote>For modern Heathens and students of Germanic culture, this scene is a powerful reminder that in the old worldview:<ul><li>boundaries were expected to be respected</li><li>warnings were meant to be taken seriously</li><li>and words themselves could carry the weight of steel</li></ul>“Þú munt ráða” is more than dialogue. It is the moment when choice hardens into consequence — and when a man is given the chance to turn back before the door closes.Sörli chose poorly.&nbsp;“Þú munt ráða” is chilling precisely because it is calm. Kolr did not shout. He did not posture. He did not negotiate endlessly.He stated a reality:<blockquote>You are choosing what happens next. </blockquote>This section of the Flóamanna saga does not ask us to imitate the violence of the age. But I believe it does confront us with a hard question:Do our words carry weight?Because in the old worldview, honor was not proven by how loudly one spoke. It was marked by how faithfully one’s words became reality.Speak carefully. Warn sparingly.But when you stake your word... do not let it fall to the ground.

When a Warning Becomes a Sentence

I was recently contacted by one of my Patreon supporters, who asked me the following question:<blockquote>Have you ever written on innangard and utamgard. In particular, improperly extending moral considerationa or frith beyond the innangard?</blockquote>While I have mentioned these concepts in multiple - maybe even dozens - of podcast episodes, I relaized I had not ever dedicated a blog post to these topics. So, in response to this question, I will attempt to answer this in ways that provide historically backed information, and clarify what modern interpretations have done to skew the sources. But when we look closely at medieval linguistic sources and responsible scholarship, we find that the terms as used today are far more modern constructions than ancient categories — and that understanding this matters deeply for how modern Heathens think about community, belonging, and ethical responsibility.<h2>Innangard and Utangard: Language Before Ideology</h2>Let's begin with getting one thing clear: the&nbsp;Old Norse terms often cited in modern Heathenry — innangarðs, innangarða, útangarða, útangarðs — do indeed exist in medieval texts, but their literary use is far more mundane than many modern glosses assume:<ol><li>Innangarðs simply means “within doors.”</li><li>Innan garða means “within the yard or enclosure.”</li><li>Útangarða means “outside the yard.”</li></ol>These occur in legal codes and sagas composed well after the Christianization of Iceland and were used in practical, not cosmological or spiritual, senses (e.g., describing spaces inside versus outside homes or fenced enclosures).In case I wasn't clear, let me emphasize that the modern compound words “innangard” and “utangard” as worldview categories — especially in the sense of an ordered “in-group” versus chaotic “out-group” — are not attested in Old Norse ritual, poetry, or myth as spiritual teachings or religious constructs. They are modern interpretive borrowings, not discrete categories of pre-Christian Germanic cosmology.<figure id="figure-7ykhvyiznkmkcydpw4"><img id="7ykhvyiznkmkcydpw4" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/36gYWfC0FxWps8JSGQrvtMkDt20P67LocvINAdwReCWGwEy1DSyLVrdRPVnW4pmY.jpeg" alt="Fiery red dramatic sky. While Grønbech’s work has influenced many Heathens, it is deeply colored by Romantic nationalist thought and pseudo-archaeological reconstructions of “Teutonic” identity. Medieval Germanic peoples certainly recognized inside/outside spatial distinctions, but they did not articulate the innangard/utangard dualism as a cosmological ethics system. Modern Heathens reclaiming these ideas should therefore prioritize frith — understood as peace through community, law, and accountability — and be wary of modern political overlays attached to ancient vocabulary.Modern Heathens (specifically those of us in the United States)&nbsp; must ask themselves the difficult questions and be prepared to face harsh truths. One such question is: How much of Heathenry in the U.S today is really rooted in Romanticism, völkisch ideology, and actual Nazi propaganda? If modern Heathenry really is focused on reconstruction, recreation, and reimagining of the Old Ways, we need to be clear about which old way we intend to follow.
