Each autumn, modern Heathens encounter a familiar question: when should we observe Winter Nights? Two answers circulate. One places it at the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. The other waits for the first new moon after the equinox and then observes the following full moon. Sometimes these rules select the same moon. Sometimes they put communities almost a lunar month apart. For people who care about historical practice, that difference matters. But before turning it into a test of who is observing “correctly,” we should ask a more basic question: what do our sources actually say? There is meaningful evidence for observances at the beginning of winter. There is also evidence for lunar reckoning. What we lack is an early source explicitly prescribing either of these two equinox formulas for Winter Nights across the Germanic world.

Bede: a winter full moon, but no explicit equinox formula
Writing in 725, Bede describes the older English calendar in chapter 15 of De temporum ratione, usually translated as The Reckoning of Time. His subject is the English months, not a Scandinavian festival calendar.[1]He says that the English reckoned months by the moon, identifies Winterfylleth with October, and explains its name through winter and the full moon. His key clause is:
a plenilunio eiusdem mensis hyems sortiretur initium
Literally: “winter took its beginning from the full moon of that same month.” This translation is mine.Bede also describes a principal division into summer and winter, and an additional lunar month inserted in some years. His account therefore supports lunar months kept in a seasonal framework. It does not explain the complete rule for assigning Winterfilleth to a particular lunation.[1]That distinction matters. “The full moon of that month” is not the same instruction as “the first full moon after the autumnal equinox.” Nor does Bede say “the full moon following the first new moon after the equinox.” Both require an additional interpretive step.
What the Norse narratives preserve
The Scandinavian evidence brings us closer to Winter Nights as an observance, although it does not settle the competing calculations. In Ynglinga saga, chapter 8, Snorri attributes a sequence of sacrifices to Óðinn: one towards winter for a good season, another in midwinter for crops, and a third in summer for victory. The passage establishes a seasonal sacrificial pattern. It does not name an equinox, a moon phase, or the exact term vetrnætr.[2]It is also a narrative about a legendary past, written by a medieval Christian author. Its value should neither be dismissed nor confused with that of a contemporary ritual calendar.Víga-Glúms saga, chapter 6, gives more specific evidence. During Glúmr’s visit to Norway, a feast is prepared at Winter Nights and a dísablót is performed. The Icelandic text explicitly uses both veturnóttum and dísablót. Edmund Head’s older English translation renders the latter more generally as a sacrifice to the gods, illustrating why checking the original terminology matters.[3]This passage connects an offering to the dísir with Winter Nights in a particular setting. It does not establish that every dísablót everywhere occurred then, or supply an astronomical rule.In Gísla saga Súrssonar, Þorgrímr prepares an autumn feast at the first night of winter and intends to sacrifice to Freyr. The surrounding description includes guests, drinking, and preparations in the hall. This is chapter 9 in George Webbe Dasent’s translation; chapter numbering differs between editions.[4]Together, these passages preserve an observance with social and religious substance. The evidence concerns people gathering, making offerings, and marking winter’s arrival. Neither saga passage tells us which of the two modern moon formulas to use.

Tacitus: lunar timing in a different context
An earlier comparison comes from Tacitus’s Germania, chapter 11. He reports that assemblies met at the new or full moon, regarded as auspicious times, and that people reckoned periods by nights rather than days.[5]This supports the significance of lunar phases in the practices he describes. It does not identify Winter Nights or place an autumn festival relative to an equinox. Evidence that the moon mattered is not evidence for every proposed moon rule. The difference is easiest to see through a hypothetical sequence:

Order of events

First full moon after the equinox

Full moon after the first new moon after the equinox

Equinox → new moon → full moon

Selects this full moon

Selects this full moon

Equinox → full moon → new moon → next full moon

Selects the earlier full moon

Selects the later full moon

The second approach requires the selected lunar month to begin after the equinox. The first requires only that the selected full moon occur after it. They are different rules, even when they happen to produce the same date. The Troth’s Winter Nights resource provides an identifiable example of the first interpretation. It suggests that, after setting aside Bede’s Roman month labels, Winterfylleþ can be understood as the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. Significantly, the page presents that connection as an interpretation, using the language of what would make sense.[6]That is a modern reconstruction based on an early source. It is not Bede’s explicit instruction.
Andreas Nordberg: more than one way of counting the year
Andreas Nordberg’s Jul, disting och förkyrklig tideräkning (2006) is a substantial study of calendars and calendrical rites in pre-Christian Scandinavia.[7]He distinguishes a year counted in weeks from a lunisolar calendar that probably existed alongside it. In his reconstruction, the seasonal quarters of the week year began approximately four weeks after the solar turning points. His English summary discusses Winter Nights within that framework. For lunar Yule, he proposes the full moon following the first new moon after the winter solstice. This is an important distinction: his explicit formula concerns Yule and the winter solstice. It should not be quoted as though it directly names Winter Nights and the autumnal equinox.Applying an analogous formula to autumn is a further reconstruction. An astronomical anchor used to regulate months also need not itself have been a festival day.Nordberg’s work therefore complicates the idea that every historical reference to winter’s beginning must encode a single lunar rule. Week reckoning and lunar reckoning need to be considered separately.[7]

Dr. Andreas E. Zautner: reconstructing a bound lunar calendar
Dr. Andreas E. Zautner’s The Lunisolar Calendar of the Germanic Peoples appeared in English in 2021. Its subtitle identifies the project as a reconstruction from ancient, medieval, and early modern sources.[8]His preface acknowledges the groundwork of Martin P. Nilsson and Nordberg, while explaining that his treatment extends to continental material and sometimes differs from theirs. The contents distinguish English, Danish, Faroese, and Icelandic evidence, and include dedicated discussions of the Faroese winter-moon rule and winter-night sacrifices. The publicly accessible preview verifies that scope, but does not expose the full winter-moon discussion. Consequently, a particular autumnal-equinox formula should not be attributed to him here as a verified quotation.[8]That limitation is worth stating plainly. Naming a researcher is not a substitute for identifying the passage supporting a claim.
Winter Nights is more than a disputed date
Terry Gunnell’s “The Season of the Dísir: The Winter Nights and the Dísablót in Early Scandinavian Belief” is a directly relevant academic study for further reading. Its bibliography can be confusing: it belongs to Cosmos 16, the volume dated 2000, but Gunnell’s own CV records publication in spring 2005.[9]Even before resolving every calendrical question, the saga passages give us something important to work with. Winter’s arrival was represented through gathering, hospitality, sacrifice, and relationships with divine or other-than-human powers. Our inquiry should include those relationships, rather than shrinking the observance to a calculation. It is reasonable to ask how a date was determined. It is also reasonable to ask what the gathering did for the people taking part.
Historical care without turning uncertainty into a contest
The strongest distinction we can make is between attestation, reconstruction, and present-day choice. An attestation is what a source actually records: Bede’s winter full moon, a saga’s feast, or its named recipient of sacrifice. A reconstruction connects such fragments into a proposed calendar. A present-day choice determines how a household or community uses that research. These are connected activities, but they carry different kinds of certainty.A community can explain, “We use the first full moon after the equinox, following this interpretation of Bede.” Another can explain, “We wait for the next lunar month to begin, following this reconstruction.” Both explanations can be examined on their evidence. Neither needs to claim that an early author explicitly supplied words that the author never wrote.Calling these two modern approaches separate “schools” is convenient, but can make the historical record look more sharply divided than it is. The sources are not two complete competing manuals. They are different kinds of testimony, from different places and periods, which we are trying to understand together. For me, taking the sources seriously means allowing them to retain their uncertainties. We can care deeply about historical practice without making a disputed moon the measure of another Heathen’s sincerity.Winter Nights gives us an opportunity to attend to the season, gather with intention, and consider the relationships expressed through our offerings. Research can deepen that work. It need not become a contest over who has earned the right to begin winter.

Sources and further reading

Bede. Winter Nights: What the Sources Tell Us—and Why the Moon Debate Remains

Ethereal smoke wisps rising against dark background, blue and amber lighting, flowing and meditative motion.

Smoke, Herb, and Hearth: Reclaiming Smoke Cleansing in Heathen Practice

I recently attended NorseForged Gathering 6 in North Carolina: a three-day immersive fantasy festival built around camping, music, combat sports, craftsmanship, creators, and modern “Viking” culture. On the surface, it appears to be exactly what many people today are hungry for: tribe, belonging, firelight, community, shared aesthetics, and escape from the gray sterility of modern life. And to be fair, not all of it was bad. There were genuinely good people there. Skilled craftsmen. Talented musicians. Honest conversations around camps and fires. Moments of laughter and temporary freedom from the suffocating machinery of the modern world. I met people who clearly long for something real, something ancestral, something deeper than the empty consumer identity that modern society offers them. But despite all of that, I left the Gathering with a growing sense of spiritual exhaustion and disappointment. Not because the event failed to entertain me.But because it revealed something about modern pagan culture that many people see, yet very few are willing to say out loud.No matter how many runes, Mjölnir's, or talismans people wear around their necks… No matter how many “tribal” aesthetics are adopted… No matter how many gods are invoked, horns are raised, or fires are lit…Human beings will still bring ego, vanity, manipulation, hierarchy, performative behavior, and social corruption into any space they occupy. Even spaces that claim to stand apart from modern society.Especially those spaces.
The Illusion Of Depth
One of the things that struck me most at NorseForged was how easily symbolism becomes mistaken for substance.Modern Heathen and Viking-inspired spaces are often saturated with imagery:

axes

antlers

tattoos

linen tunics

ritual language

campfire philosophy

social media aesthetics

and curated personas

But aesthetics are not character. A man can speak endlessly about Odin while possessing none of the wisdom, sacrifice, restraint, or self-discipline associated with him. A person can claim to honor Thor while lacking courage, reliability, or integrity. A community can preach “tribe” while quietly tolerating arrogance, exclusion, dishonesty, and status games beneath the surface. The old Germanic worldview never judged people merely by what they claimed to believe. People were judged by conduct:

oath-keeping

reciprocity

reliability

restraint

courage

hospitality

and how they carried themselves when no audience was watching

Today, many modern pagan spaces have inverted this entirely. Presentation has become more important than transformation.
The Rise of Pagan Celebrity Culture

Another uncomfortable reality I observed was the strange exaltation of content creators and online personalities.Influencers, podcasters, educators, streamers, and “Viking celebrities” are increasingly treated as cultural authorities simply because they possess visibility. And visibility is not wisdom. The modern internet has created a counterfeit form of spiritual status where algorithms elevate personalities faster than communities cultivate character. At gatherings like this, certain individuals move through crowds almost like minor nobility:

admired,

photographed,

socially protected,

constantly validated,

and insulated from criticism.

That kind of environment inevitably feeds ego. And ego is one of the most spiritually corrosive forces any tradition can face.I watched people posture as enlightened voices of wisdom while simultaneously displaying behavior that revealed insecurity, pretentiousness, vanity, or a hunger for social power. Not everyone, of course. But enough that the pattern became impossible to ignore. What disturbed me most was not that flawed people existed there. That is inevitable. What disturbed me was how enthusiastically modern pagan culture rewards performance over authenticity.
The Campfire and the Mask

There is a strange contradiction at the heart of many modern alternative communities. People gather because they are starving for authenticity. But once enough people gather together, performance inevitably emerges.People begin curating identities. Curating aesthetics. Curating personas. Curating “brands.”Even spirituality itself becomes something staged for visibility. The campfire becomes a backdrop. The ritual becomes content. The gathering becomes a social ladder. And eventually, something sacred begins to die beneath all the noise.I found myself repeatedly asking: "What remains when the costumes come off?"Strip away the social media pages. Strip away the handcrafted leather. Strip away the "Viking" imagery. Strip away the fantasy immersion.Who are these people really?Because in many cases, I saw individuals fleeing modern emptiness while unknowingly recreating the exact same shallow status structures they claim to reject. Only this time wrapped in runes and animal pelts.
Intuition, Premonition, and Spiritual Dissonance

Before I even arrived at the Gathering, something already felt off.I cannot fully explain it in rational terms, nor do I care to exaggerate it into melodrama. But there was a lingering sense of dissonance sitting in the back of my mind before events even unfolded around me. As Heathens, many of us speak often about intuition, Wyrd, omens, instinct, and pattern recognition. Historically, our ancestors understood that human beings are capable of perceiving imbalance long before it fully reveals itself outwardly.Sometimes you enter a place and immediately feel warmth, alignment, and groundedness. Other times, beneath the music and laughter, there is tension beneath the floorboards. Not visible at first, but present. And over the course of the Gathering, that feeling only intensified. What I witnessed was not some catastrophic collapse into chaos. It was something subtler and perhaps more concerning: spiritual hollowness hidden beneath theatrical intensity. People desperately wanting meaning… while participating in environments that often encourage superficiality instead of depth.
The Hunger Modern People Cannot Name
This is the tragedy of events like NorseForged. I do not believe most people attend because they are foolish. I think many attend because they are spiritually starving.Modern society has stripped people of:

rootedness

initiation

shared myth

sacred community

meaningful rites

ancestral continuity

and authentic belonging.

People are desperate to feel connected to something older and more real than the artificial existence modernity offers them. That hunger is real. I felt it there everywhere. But hunger alone does not create wisdom. A crowd of starving people can still build shallow cultures around itself if nobody is willing to pursue discipline, honesty, accountability, or self-examination.Aesthetic tribalism is not the same thing as spiritual depth, and pretending otherwise only delays the deeper work many people truly need.
A Necessary Reflection
This article is not an attack on NorseForged specifically. In many ways, the Gathering merely reflects broader problems that exist throughout modern paganism, online culture, influencer culture, and even human nature itself.Nor is this article written from bitterness. If anything, it is written from disappointment.Because I believe many people involved in these spaces sincerely long for truth, transformation, and community. But too often, those desires become swallowed by ego, performance, social climbing, escapism, and hollow spectacle. As a Heathen, I cannot ignore that contradiction anymore. Our ancestors were flawed human beings too. The sagas themselves are filled with jealousy, pride, betrayal, greed, arrogance, manipulation, and violence. But the old traditions did not glorify those traits. They warned about them constantly.Modern Heathen spaces would do well to remember that. No amount of ritual aesthetics can compensate for a lack of integrity. No amount of “tribal” imagery can manufacture wisdom. And no gathering, no matter how immersive or entertaining, can replace the difficult inner work required to become a person of actual substance.Perhaps that is the real lesson I carried home from the fires of NorseForged. Not cynicism...Discernment.

If modern Heathenry becomes nothing more than aesthetics, influencer worship, and escapist tribalism, then we should not be surprised when people leave these spaces spiritually unchanged. The real question is whether our communities are forming stronger human beings…or merely entertaining wounded ones.

A Heathen Reflection on NorseForged Gathering: When Community Becomes Performance

Medieval scandinavian man and modern scandinavian

Have you ever been in a situation where you either told someone "Have it your way!", or "Suit yourself!"? Has anyone ever told you something along the lines of "Don't say I didn't warn you!"? On the surface, these types of verbal responses may seem like an "open threat', with no real or credible consequence to follow. But in many of the Sagas, words are more than just warnings: they're sentences to carry out. One such example can be seen in the Flóamanna saga (“Saga of the Men of Flói”), also known as Þorgils saga Ørrabeinsstjúps. This is one of the Icelandic family sagas, which primarily follows Þorgils Ørrabeinsstjúpr, whose life is marked by misfortune, exile, and endurance in extreme conditions (especially the famous Greenland episodes). But early in the saga, before Þorgils’ later hardships, we are given a sharp window into honor culture and social signaling, particularly through the conflict involving a man named Kolr, his sister Guðrún, and another man called Sörli.

In the early chapters of this sage, we encounter a moment that perfectly captures how serious words were in the Old Norse world. It comes in the tense exchange between Kolr and Sörli, when Sörli shows interest in Kolr’s sister, Guðrún.
"There was a man named Sörli. He lived not far from Kálfaholt. He used to come to Kálfaholt to see Guðrún, the sister of Starkad and Kol. One day Kolur went to Sörli and asked him to stop coming to Guðrún, their sister. Sörli said he would do as he pleased, but heeded no word from him. 'You will decide,' Kolur said."At first glance, this sounds almost permissive — even passive. But in saga culture, this phrase carries weight far beyond its literal translation.
Not Permission... A Final Notice
In the honor-bound society reflected in the sagas, speech is rarely casual. Kolr’s words are not giving Sörli freedom to proceed. They are doing something much colder and more deliberate:

Kolr has issued his warning

He has fulfilled his social duty

Responsibility now shifts to Sörli

In modern terms, it lands closer to:

“Suit yourself.”

“Your call.”

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” But even those soften the edge. In saga logic, this is the moment the path to violence becomes morally structured.

What follows is grim but predictable. Sörli ignores the warning and continues pursuing Guðrún. Kolr eventually kills him. Importantly, the saga does not frame this as hot-headed rage. Instead, it reads like the natural consequence of ignored counsel. Kolr established the boundary. Sörli chose to cross it. That distinction matters enormously in the saga worldview. In many Icelandic family sagas, violence is preceded by brief, controlled speech that:

marks the boundary

assigns responsibility

and quietly signals what comes next

“Þú munt ráða” is a textbook example of this ritualized warning language.

Cold Words, Heavy Consequences
One of the defining features of saga literature is emotional restraint. Where a modern story might give us threats and shouting, the saga gives us something far more chilling: calm inevitability.Kolr does not bluster. He does not posture. He simply makes the responsibility clear.
Your choice becomes your fate. That is the real power behind the phrase.
For modern Heathens and students of Germanic culture, this scene is a powerful reminder that in the old worldview:

boundaries were expected to be respected

warnings were meant to be taken seriously

and words themselves could carry the weight of steel

“Þú munt ráða” is more than dialogue. It is the moment when choice hardens into consequence — and when a man is given the chance to turn back before the door closes.Sörli chose poorly. “Þú munt ráða” is chilling precisely because it is calm. Kolr did not shout. He did not posture. He did not negotiate endlessly. He stated a reality:
You are choosing what happens next.
This section of the Flóamanna saga does not ask us to imitate the violence of the age. But I believe it does confront us with a hard question:Do our words carry weight?Because in the old worldview, honor was not proven by how loudly one spoke. It was marked by how faithfully one’s words became reality.Speak carefully. Warn sparingly. But when you stake your word... do not let it fall to the ground.

When a Warning Becomes a Sentence

I was recently contacted by one of my Patreon supporters, who asked me the following question:
Have you ever written on innangard and utamgard. In particular, improperly extending moral considerationa or frith beyond the innangard?
While I have mentioned these concepts in multiple - maybe even dozens - of podcast episodes, I relaized I had not ever dedicated a blog post to these topics. So, in response to this question, I will attempt to answer this in ways that provide historically backed information, and clarify what modern interpretations have done to skew the sources. What you are about to read will likely challenge your current worldview (I was certainly challenged similarly before coming to my conclusions) so be prepared to get uncomfortable and be held accountable.

In modern Heathen discourse, especially within Ásatrú and Germanic Neopagan communities in the United States, the paired concepts of innangard and utangard are frequently invoked as foundational worldview categories — the safe inside versus the hostile outside of community and culture — with frith (Old Norse friðr, Old English friðu) held as the peace and security enjoyed by those within the innangard. But when we look closely at medieval linguistic sources and responsible scholarship, we find that the terms as used today are far more modern constructions than ancient categories — and that understanding this matters deeply for how modern Heathens think about community, belonging, and ethical responsibility.
Innangard and Utangard: Language Before Ideology
Let's begin with getting one thing clear: the Old Norse terms often cited in modern Heathenry — innangarðs, innangarða, útangarða, útangarðs — do indeed exist in medieval texts, but their literary use is far more mundane than many modern glosses assume:

Innangarðs simply means “within doors.”

Innan garða means “within the yard or enclosure.”

Útangarða means “outside the yard.”

These occur in legal codes and sagas composed well after the Christianization of Iceland and were used in practical, not cosmological or spiritual, senses (e.g., describing spaces inside versus outside homes or fenced enclosures). In case I wasn't clear, let me emphasize that the modern compound words “innangard” and “utangard” as worldview categories — especially in the sense of an ordered “in-group” versus chaotic “out-group” — are not attested in Old Norse ritual, poetry, or myth as spiritual teachings or religious constructs. They are modern interpretive borrowings, not discrete categories of pre-Christian Germanic cosmology.
<img id="7ykhvyiznkmkcydpw4" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/36gYWfC0FxWps8JSGQrvtMkDt20P67LocvINAdwReCWGwEy1DSyLVrdRPVnW4pmY.jpeg" alt="Fiery red dramatic sky. While Grønbech’s work has influenced many Heathens, it is deeply colored by Romantic nationalist thought and pseudo-archaeological reconstructions of “Teutonic” identity. In Grønbech’s hands, Midgard (literally “middle enclosure”) became something akin to a sacred ethnic homeland opposed to Utgard, a concept which in turn was absorbed into some modern Heathen interpretations of innangard/utangard dualism.

Medieval Usage is Practical, Not Ideological
One crucial point that I would like to emphasize, is that the roots of the Old Norse terms are not mystical or cosmological:

In the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, the realm of giants is called Utgard (e.g., in the tale of Útgarða-Loki). But here the term útgarðar simply describes “outer buildings” or “lands outside the enclosures,” not a metaphysical antithesis to human order.

Narrative elements in Norse myth — such as Thor’s journey to face giants beyond Midgard’s boundaries — are literary tropes about crossing physical boundaries in mythic stories, not indicators of a systematic spiritual dualism teaching “innangard vs. utangard” as moral categories.

Thus, the linguistic and textual evidence supports a much simpler spatial division — inside and outside of built, social space — rather than a deep theological or ethical dichotomy in ancient belief.
Frith: The Real Germanic Social Value
Where medieval Germanic cultures did have a robust concept was in frith — the peace, protection, and mutual obligation binding kin, kindreds, and lawful communities. Frith was not abstract; it was grounded in relationships, law, and reciprocity — and it was enforceable. Medieval legal texts (such as Grágás) reflect how frith was lost when one became an outlaw (excluded from society’s legal protections). Although the innangard/utangard vocabulary may not be directly present, frith is deeply documented in practice. This underscores that if we want to recover a historically grounded Germanic ethos, focus should be on the relational and ethical structures (frith, law, compensation, hospitality) that can be demonstrably connected to medieval texts rather than on modern dualisms imported into the discourse.
<img id="4xt6q5q328mkcyv2gy" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/aZTGdBpVtVsBM2DMExkPcV48DjPuVFOlIAuy6A783JoXtSKZnU9XkUnzM7AmmrRL.jpeg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="Norse goddess Gefjon statue by Anders Bundgaard on the Gefion Fountain. Churchill Park . Copenhagen. Denmark

Implications for Modern Heathen Communities
I believe that whether we like it or not... whether or not these facts make us uncomfortable... there is no way to rightly gainsay that everything I have stated thus far makes a sober and important point for contemporary Heathens: using innangard and utangard as rigid in-group vs. out-group moral categories can unintentionally echo ideologies (e.g., Nordicist völkisch thought) that have been used to justify exclusionary and even harmful worldviews in the modern era — ideologies that do not reflect the actual complexity of medieval Germanic religion and law.Instead, a historically and ethically robust modern Heathen practice can:

Recognize frith as the real ancient social value — peace grounded in mutual obligation and accountability.

Understand that ancient Norse and Germanic sources do acknowledge boundaries and dangers beyond community life (e.g., giants in myth, lawless spaces), but not in a way that implies a cosmic moral dualism of “us vs. them.”

Resist appropriating terms or frameworks that have been shaped by ideological movements external to Old Norse religion.

In other words, frith — rather than “innangard” as an absolute moral boundary — better captures what mattered in historical Germanic cultures: the commitment to uphold peace, uphold reciprocal bonds, and maintain lawful sanctuary for those within one’s relational network.
Conclusion: A Grounded Heathen Perspective
When we root our understanding of innangard, utangard, and frith in rigorous philology and critical historical scholarship, we move away from unexamined dualisms and ideological borrowings and toward a more nuanced, ethically grounded Heathen worldview. Medieval Germanic peoples certainly recognized inside/outside spatial distinctions, but they did not articulate the innangard/utangard dualism as a cosmological ethics system. Modern Heathens reclaiming these ideas should therefore prioritize frith — understood as peace through community, law, and accountability — and be wary of modern political overlays attached to ancient vocabulary.Modern Heathens (specifically those of us in the United States) must ask themselves the difficult questions and be prepared to face harsh truths. One such question is: How much of Heathenry in the U.S today is really rooted in Romanticism, völkisch ideology, and actual Nazi propaganda? If modern Heathenry really is focused on reconstruction, recreation, and reimagining of the Old Ways, we need to be clear about which old way we intend to follow. For some, the difficulty will be in pruning away beloved elements with roots in a relatively recent and decidedly dark past.

Key Sources:

Laws of Early Iceland: Grágás I. Re-Examining Innangard, Utangard, and Frith Toward A Historically Grounded Heathen Ethos

Among modern Heathens, few discussions generate as much quiet tension as when Yule should be observed. Many contemporary practices place Yule on the Winter Solstice, aligning it with broader modern Pagan and solar-based observances. Yet historically, pre-Christian Germanic Heathens did not celebrate Yule on the solstice itself.Instead, the sources point to Yule as a midwinter feast, most plausibly held on the first full moon after the first new moon following the Winter Solstice. This raises an important question that goes far beyond calendar accuracy:Why was Yule observed when it was... and what does that timing reveal about how the gods were understood to be present, accessible, or engaged with humanity? This article explores that question by weaving together historical evidence and theological analysis, not to police modern practice, but to understand what is gained (or lost) when Yule is shifted away from its historical placement.

Historical Grounding: When Was Yule Celebrated?
The Germanic peoples used luni-solar calendars, not fixed solar dates. This is reflected across Norse, Anglo-Saxon, and broader Germanic traditions.Key references include:

Snorri Sturluson, Heimskringla and Gylfaginning, which describe midvetrarblót and Yule as a central winter sacrifice, not a solstice rite.

Saga material indicating Yule as a multi-night feast tied to lunar reckoning.

Bede, De Temporum Ratione, which attests to Germanic winter festivals such as Mōdraniht, again emphasizing calendrical reckoning distinct from strict solar observance.

Taken together, these sources support the understanding that Yule occurred after the solstice, once winter had fully taken hold. The solstice marked a cosmic turning point, but Yule marked something else entirely: endurance within winter, not the promise of its end.

The Gods Were Not Omnipresent—and That Matters
A crucial theological clarification must be made early:The Germanic gods were not omnipresent.Across the Eddas, sagas, and earlier Roman ethnography (notably Tacitus’ Germania), the gods are consistently depicted as:

Embodied beings

Locatable in space

Required to travel

Able to arrive late, be absent, or be occupied elsewhere

Odin rides Sleipnir between worlds. Thor journeys and is often away from Ásgarðr. The gods assemble for councils. These narrative details are not incidental... they reflect a worldview fundamentally different from later Christian metaphysics. However, non-omnipresence does not mean seasonal absence.
Presence, Accessibility, and Attention: A More Accurate Model
To understand Yule properly, we must abandon binary thinking ("the gods are here" vs. "the gods are gone") and adopt a model that better fits the sources.

Existence. The gods always exist. There is no mythic or ritual cycle in which they disappear from the cosmos.

Presence. The gods are somewhere, not everywhere. They dwell in halls, lands, groves, and realms. Distance (both physical and relational) is real.

Accessibility. Accessibility is situational and relational, not calendrical in a mechanical sense. It depends on:

Correct ritual action

Established reciprocity

Place

Communal necessity

Timing within the cycles of life and survival

Yule was not a moment when the gods suddenly became reachable. It was a moment when human vulnerability and divine relevance aligned most sharply.

Why Yule Was Held in Deep Midwinter
By the time of historical Yule:

Winter had proven itself

Stores were diminished

Hunger and death were no longer abstract threats

The community had already suffered losses

This is the context that gives sacrifice meaning.Old Ways Germanic Heathenry was deeply pragmatic. One does not offer sacrifice based on hope alone, but on necessity. Yule was held when survival was uncertain and when divine favor was not a luxury, but a matter of continuity. In this sense, Yule marks a pressure point in Wyrd: a narrowing of possibilities where the future year had not yet resolved itself.
Were the Gods “Closer” at Yule?
Not closer in location... but closer in relevance. The gods were not thought to descend en masse into Midgard for Yule. Rather, Yule created conditions where:

Offerings carried real cost

Words spoken carried weight

Oaths mattered

Reciprocity was tested

The gods did not become accessible because of the date. The date mattered because it coincided with human dependence.

What Happens When Yule Is Observed on the Solstice?
Celebrating Yule on the Winter Solstice does not “cut off” access to the gods. Germanic religion does not support the idea that performing a rite on the wrong date renders it void. However, it does change the meaning of the act.A solstice Yule:

Emphasizes solar rebirth over endurance

Aligns more closely with modern Pagan symbolism

Occurs before winter’s full weight is felt

This is not inherently wrong... but it is not the same ritual, cosmologically or theologically. What is lost is not divine attention, but existential gravity.
The Real Question Is Reciprocity, Not Access
Germanic Heathen ritual was never about summoning distant gods through precise calendrical correctness. It was about meeting the gods honestly, through:

Real sacrifice

Communal necessity

Proper timing within lived reality

A historically timed Yule forces confrontation with scarcity, mortality, and dependence. Without those elements, the rite risks becoming symbolic rather than consequential.
<img id="c4bydwsxpmmjhgdg9p" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/36f5j87SjAuq1ypCGdhJ9oG5ikoRXcZkRy3pzQmR45G3gwOVkAJ9noXhM3BpEJF9.jpeg" alt="Ancient wooden slavic pagan idol of god. It was a declaration of survival in darkness. The gods were never omnipresent, but neither were they seasonal visitors. They walked the worlds, engaged through relationship, obligation, and need. When Yule is moved earlier, what is lost is not access to the gods, but the weight that made calling upon them necessary.Understanding this does not require abandoning modern practice, but it does require honesty about what is being done, and why.In Heathenry, timing was never about perfection. It was about truth.
